Like the Duc, the GS Adventure is loaded with electronic controls to help you through your ride. There are two ride modes standard on the bike, along with Automatic Stability Control for added safety. The coolest thing, though, is that you get your choice of six-speed manual or six-speed DCT automatic transmissions. An automatic! On a motorcycle! Yes, the Goldwing also gets and automatic, but here on the Africa Twin it can be a real help when bushwacking through the boondocks. On top of that the chassis is slimmer and lighter than before. And it comes with six ride modes, seven levels of traction control, and three levels of engine braking.
I am getting soft. But it was so nice. But get the bigger bike. Well, they delivered it just before the pandemic shut everything down, then they just kept sending me new loan agreements to sign, and I kept signing. The result was a great year on an all-around, everything bike that I could do anything I wanted to on.
I could hightail it over the mountains, eating up twisty two-lanes like black licorice, then pop out into the mighty Mojave desert and keep going in the dirt for as long as I thought I could get away with it. The 1,cc longitudinally mounted degree V Twin makes a highly useable hp and 74 lb-ft of torque, enough to squirt you into triple-digit speeds on the freeway without you even realizing it, and to keep you hammering on the desert dirt all day.
It felt smaller than the BMW, for instance, and it was even a little lighter. I kept finding excuses to put on all the gear and go riding. You will, too. Powered by a liquid-cooled V-Twin making a claimed hp, the engine functions as a stressed member of the chassis, keeping weight to pounds in the base model and in the Special.
Both models get electronic controls, with the Special getting more of them. There are five ride modes road, sport, rain, off-road, and off-road plus , all of which offer different levels of system intervention for as much help as you want when riding. The Pan America Special adds electronically adjustable semi-active front and rear dampers that adjust to prevailing conditions and riding activity, which sounds helpful if you go from pavement to dirt, for instance.

The GS spent decades proving its capability in the remote parts of the world, with each generation improving on the last. You can rest assured the R GS Adventure is the best BMW Motorrad has to offer — at least, as far as the adventure touring motorcycle experience is concerned.
Packing shorter suspension travel than a full-on adventure bike but more utility than a stiffer sport bike, adventure sport touring bikes could live their entire life on the pavement without complaint. With street tires, they make for decent commuters. At a fraction of the price of most of its competitors, the Suzuki V-Strom XT makes big-ticket tech attainable.
It may sit tall, but its balance only lends itself to total versatility; the quirky Italian style is just a plus. Often borrowing much of their chassis, powertrain, electronics, and suspension development straight from factory MotoGP and Dakar Rally teams, adventure motorcycles often represent the flagship offerings of major moto marques, and as a result are often bestowed with the latest and greatest, most cutting-edge powertrains and technologies.
Because of their robust suspension, upright powerful engines, and a suite of protection, adventure motorcycles are also wildly versatile, and lend themselves tremendously well to just about any riding application, from fire trail exploration to cross-continent touring to moto camping.
Their upright riding position also makes adventure bikes a stellar choice for urban commuting duties. And, while you may not guess it from looking, when properly set up, adventure motorcycles can offer some shockingly high performance on the road — as evidenced by a mostly-stock Ducati Multistrada winning the motorcycle class at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
To help start your search, begin by narrowing down your selection of bikes based on your skill level and riding experience. You can always upgrade to a larger, more powerful model later on down the road. By looking at how much time you plan on riding on-road versus off-road, you should be able to narrow down your search to models designed for your intended riding applications. On top of often sporting elements like sump-guards, crash bars, hard luggage, and auxiliary lighting, the more off-road-focused adventure motorcycles will also feature better ground clearance and markedly longer suspension travel.
Mid-sized adventure bikes are also a fantastic option, as they offer a compromise with less weight than big-bore models — and therefore better off-road prowess — while still being plenty free-way travel capable. Technology: Representing some of the most advanced motorcycles on earth, modern adventure bikes must be able to contend with an enormous variety of settings and conditions.
